Hail Damage Roof Repair in The Woodlands, TX

We Look for Bruising, Not Holes

A hail hit crushes the mat under the granules. It leaves a soft dark circle rather than a puncture. Finding those is what a hail inspection is, and it is why it has to be done on the roof rather than from the ground.

Soft Metal Tells the Story First

Gutters, downspouts, vents, and flashing dent before shingles show anything. We check those first because they date the storm and confirm the hail was big enough to matter.

Every Slope Checked

Hail comes in at an angle, driven by the storm's wind. One slope can be destroyed while the opposite slope is untouched. Checking only the accessible side is how damage gets missed.

Documented for Your Own Claim

We photograph what we find, mark test squares, and give you a written estimate you can use with your insurer. Documentation support only, which is what a roofing contractor is permitted to provide in Texas.

Repair or Replace, Answered Straight

Scattered bruising on one slope can be a repair. Widespread granule loss across every slope generally is not. We tell you which one your roof is and why.

Impact Resistant Options

If you are replacing after hail, Class 4 impact resistant shingles are worth a conversation. Many Texas carriers discount premiums for them, and in a hail region the upgrade often pays back.

Why Hail Damage Gets Missed

Hail is the most expensive kind of storm damage in the country and the easiest to overlook on your own house. The Insurance Information Institute reports that hail alone accounts for as much as 80 percent of severe convective storm claims in any given year, and that severe convective storms produced roughly 51 billion dollars in United States insured losses in 2025, the third year running above 50 billion.

The reason so much of that goes unnoticed at first is that hail damage is not usually a hole. A hailstone hits an asphalt shingle and crushes the fiberglass mat underneath the surface. The granules that protect the asphalt from ultraviolet light come loose and wash into the gutter. From the ground, and often from a ladder at the eave, the roof looks unchanged. What has actually happened is that the shingle's clock has been moved forward: the exposed asphalt now ages faster, and a roof with fifteen years left may have five.

That delay is the problem. By the time the roof starts leaking, the storm that caused it may be well outside the window your policy allows for reporting a loss. A roof that was hit and never looked at is a roof that quietly becomes your expense rather than a covered one.

What We Look For

A real hail inspection happens on the roof, and it follows a fairly specific order.

Soft Metal First

Before we look at a single shingle we look at the metal: gutters, downspouts, gutter aprons, vent hoods, turbine vents, and any flashing. Aluminum and thin steel dent at a smaller stone size than a shingle bruises at, so the metal is the earliest and clearest evidence that hail of a meaningful size actually fell on this house. It also helps establish roughly when, because fresh dents are bright inside while older ones have oxidized.

Test Squares on Each Slope

The standard method is a marked ten foot by ten foot square on each slope, counted for impacts. That gives a density rather than an impression, and density is what determines whether a roof is repairable or has been taken past that. It also means the north slope and the south slope get judged separately, which matters because hail is driven in at an angle and routinely destroys one elevation while leaving another alone.

The Bruise Itself

A genuine hail hit is round, has lost granules at the center, and feels soft when you press it, like a bruise on fruit. That softness is the crushed mat and it is the thing that separates hail from the many other marks on an older roof. Blistering, manufacturing defects, foot traffic scuffs, and mechanical damage all look superficially similar and none of them are hail. Calling those hail is how contractors get claims denied and homeowners get a reputation with their carrier.

Hail and Your Deductible

One structural thing about Texas policies is worth understanding before you decide what to do, because it changes the arithmetic on small claims.

In Texas the windstorm deductible applies to windstorm and hail damage from any kind of windstorm, not only from named storms or hurricanes. That is different from states where a percentage deductible is triggered only by a declared hurricane. And these deductibles are commonly written as a percentage of the insured value of the dwelling rather than as a flat dollar figure, typically somewhere between one and five percent according to the Insurance Information Institute.

The part that surprises people is what the percentage applies to. It is calculated against your dwelling coverage limit, not against the size of the loss. So the deductible on a hail claim can be a substantial number even when the damage is moderate, and it is worth knowing that figure before you decide whether a claim makes sense. Your declarations page will show it.

We will document what we find and give you a written estimate. What we will not do is tell you what your claim is worth, negotiate with your carrier, or do anything with your deductible other than bill it as it is written. More on where that line sits is on our roof insurance claim documentation page.

Repairing Versus Replacing After Hail

Hail damage is one of the clearer repair-versus-replace decisions, because it is driven by how spread out the damage is rather than how bad any single spot looks.

Repair is reasonable when the impacts are confined to one slope, the density is low, and the rest of the roof is in good condition. Replacing a section of shingles, a dented vent, and a run of gutter is a real fix in that situation.

Replacement becomes the honest answer when bruising shows up across multiple slopes at meaningful density, because at that point the whole surface has been aged rather than a part of it damaged. Patching a roof whose entire granule layer has been knocked loose buys very little time. Our roof replacement page covers what that work involves.

If you are replacing anyway, consider impact resistant shingles. Class 4 rated products are built to take a hit without the mat failing, and many Texas insurers offer a premium credit for them. In a part of the country that gets hit this regularly, that is not an upsell so much as a straightforward calculation.

After the Storm

If hail has just come through, the order of operations is simple. Photograph anything obvious from the ground, including dented gutters and the hailstones themselves against something for scale if you still can. Note the date. Then get the roof looked at.

If shingles are actually off and water is getting in, that is an emergency roof repair and should be treated as one rather than waiting for an inspection appointment, and emergency roof tarping is the temporary measure that buys the time. If nothing is leaking and you simply want the roof assessed and documented, a hail damage roof inspection is the place to start. Hail that arrives with high wind often does both, which is why our storm damage roof repair and wind damage roof repair pages overlap with this one.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I know if my roof has hail damage?

Usually you cannot tell from the ground. Look first at soft metal: dents in gutters, downspouts, and vent hoods mean hail of a meaningful size fell. Shingle damage shows as round spots with granules missing that feel soft when pressed, and that has to be checked on the roof.

Does hail damage always leak?

No, and that is the problem. Hail usually bruises the shingle mat and strips granules rather than punching through. The roof does not leak, it just ages much faster, so damage from a storm two years ago can show up as a failure well after the window for reporting that loss has closed.

Will you help me with my insurance claim?

We document the damage with photographs and measurements and give you a written estimate for your own use, and we can meet your adjuster at the property to walk through the scope of repair. Texas does not allow a contractor to act as a public adjuster on a job they are also contracted to repair, so we do not file, negotiate, or represent you on the claim.

How long do I have to report hail damage?

That depends on your policy, and policies differ on the deadline for reporting a loss and on the time limit for filing suit. Check your policy language and contact your carrier promptly. The Texas Department of Insurance is the right source for your rights as a policyholder.

Are impact resistant shingles worth it in this area?

Often, yes. Class 4 impact resistant shingles are built so the mat survives a hit that would bruise a standard shingle, and many Texas carriers offer a premium discount for installing them. In a region that takes hail this regularly, the upgrade tends to make sense when you are already replacing.
