What We Do Install
TPO, PVC, and modified bitumen, supplied through Duro-Last and Versico. Those three cover the large majority of low-slope buildings in this region.
Rubber, Not Thermoplastic
EPDM is a cured rubber. TPO and PVC are thermoplastics whose seams are heat welded. That single difference drives most of the practical distinctions.
Seams Are the Difference
EPDM seams are adhered with tape or adhesive. Thermoplastic seams are welded into a single mass. Seam method is the main determinant of long-term watertightness.
Colour and Heat
EPDM is traditionally black and absorbs heat. On the Gulf Coast that is a real consideration, and it is part of why white TPO dominates here.

We are putting that in the first paragraph rather than the last because the alternative is wasting your time. Plenty of contractor sites list every membrane in the category and sort out the details later. If EPDM is what your building needs, you should know within ten seconds that we are not the right call, and you should have enough information from this page to have a useful conversation with whoever is.
The comparison below is still worth reading if you are at the specification stage, because the choice between these four systems is usually made on two or three practical differences rather than on general quality. All four are mature products. None of them is bad.
What EPDM Actually Is
EPDM stands for ethylene propylene diene monomer, which is a synthetic rubber. It arrives as large sheets, traditionally black, and it has been used on commercial roofs since the 1960s, which makes it the oldest of the modern single ply systems and the one with the longest real-world track record.
The defining characteristic is that it is a cured rubber rather than a thermoplastic. That sounds like chemistry trivia and it is actually the source of nearly every practical difference. A thermoplastic can be re-melted, which means its seams can be heat welded into one continuous mass. A cured rubber cannot, so EPDM seams are joined with tape or adhesive instead.
Rubber also stays flexible in cold better than most alternatives, which is a genuine advantage in northern climates and close to irrelevant here. And it handles ultraviolet exposure and ozone very well, which is why black EPDM roofs last as long as they do despite absorbing a lot of sun.
The Four Membranes, Compared
The distinctions that actually decide a specification.
Seam Method
This is the most consequential difference. TPO and PVC are hot-air welded, meaning adjacent sheets are fused into a single piece of material at the seam. EPDM seams rely on adhesive tape. Modern EPDM tapes are far better than the early ones, but an adhered seam and a welded seam are different things over twenty years, and seams are where low-slope roofs leak.
Heat and Colour
EPDM is traditionally black and absorbs solar heat. White reflective membranes re-emit it. In a northern climate the black roof is arguably an advantage in winter. On the Gulf Coast, where cooling load runs most of the year and attic and plenum temperatures are already extreme, it is mostly a cost. White EPDM exists but is less common and gives up some of the material's price advantage. This is a substantial part of why white TPO became the default on commercial buildings in this region.
Chemical Resistance
This is where the membranes genuinely diverge and where the answer is not a preference. EPDM is a rubber and it is degraded by petroleum products, oils, and grease. PVC resists them well. If your building vents kitchen grease or hydrocarbons onto its own roof, which is the normal situation above a restaurant or certain manufacturing processes, PVC is the correct answer and EPDM is the wrong one regardless of anything else. Puncture and Foot Traffic
EPDM is comparatively soft and can be punctured more easily than a reinforced thermoplastic. On a roof with heavy maintenance traffic, or with a lot of equipment being serviced, that matters. Modified bitumen is the toughest of the four underfoot, which is part of why it remains specified on roofs that get walked regularly.
What We Would Recommend Instead, and When
For most low-slope buildings in Montgomery and Harris counties, the honest answer is that one of the three systems we install is at least as good a fit as EPDM would be.
TPO is the volume choice: white, reflective, welded seams, and well suited to the heat here. PVC is the answer where grease or chemical exhaust is in play. Modified bitumen suits roofs that see regular foot traffic and maintenance activity. Where an existing membrane is aging but structurally sound, roof coating can extend service life without a tear-off, which is often the right answer against a capital budget that is not ready.
Where EPDM has a genuine edge is in cold climates and on simple roofs with few penetrations where its lower installed cost tells. Neither of those is a strong argument on the Gulf Coast.
