Fascia Carries the Gutters
The gutter is fastened to the fascia board. Once that board softens, the gutter starts pulling away, which makes the water problem worse.
Soffit Carries the Intake Air
Soffit vents are where air enters your attic. Blocked or painted over, the ventilation system above them stops working properly.
Rot Is a Symptom
Soffit and fascia rarely fail on their own. Overflowing gutters, a short drip edge, or a leak above them is usually the actual cause.

Fix the Cause First
Replacing rotted trim without correcting the water that rotted it means doing it again. We would rather find the source.
What They Are and What They Do
Stand at the corner of your house and look up at the edge of the roof. The vertical board running along the roof edge, the one your gutters are attached to, is the fascia. The horizontal surface tucked underneath the overhang, between the fascia and the exterior wall, is the soffit.
They are usually treated as trim, which undersells them. The fascia is structural in a practical sense: it closes off the rafter tails and it carries the entire weight of a full gutter, which is considerable. The soffit is not just a cover. It holds the vents that let air into your attic, which is the intake half of the ventilation system that keeps your roof from cooking itself.
They also sit at the one point on a building where three different trades meet: roofing above, gutters attached, siding alongside. Water that gets past any of those ends up here.
Why They Fail
Almost never on their own. Soffit and fascia rot is a symptom, and finding the cause is the difference between fixing it once and fixing it repeatedly.
Gutters That Overflow or Sit Wrong
This is the most common cause. A gutter packed with pine needles overflows behind itself rather than out the front, running water straight down the fascia. A gutter pitched wrong holds standing water against the board it is fastened to. Either way the fascia stays wet, and wood that stays wet in this humidity does not last.
Then it compounds: as the fascia softens, the fasteners holding the gutter lose their grip, the gutter starts pulling away, and it overflows more. Our gutter repair and gutter cleaning pages cover the cause, and gutter guards address the debris that starts it under pine cover.
Missing or Short Drip Edge
Drip edge is the metal flashing along the roof edge that directs water off the roof and into the gutter rather than letting it run back under the shingles and down the fascia. On older roofs it is sometimes absent entirely, and on poorly installed ones it is too short or set behind the gutter rather than into it. The result is water tracking down the face of the board on every rain. This is roofing work and it gets corrected during a roof replacement.
A Leak Above
Water entering the roof upslope runs along the underside of the decking and frequently exits at the eave, which is where the soffit is. Stained or sagging soffit with no gutter problem usually means the actual leak is somewhere on the roof. Blocked Ventilation
The other failure mode is not rot at all. Soffit vents get painted over, or insulation gets pushed into the eaves during an attic top-up and blocks them from inside. The soffit looks perfect and the attic can no longer breathe, which shortens the life of the roof above. What We Handle
Being straightforward about the boundary: ROYH Build Co does not currently offer standalone soffit and fascia replacement as a service.
What we do handle is most of what causes the problem and a good deal of what surrounds it. Drip edge and roof edge detailing during roofing work. Gutter installation, repair, and replacement, including correcting pitch and fastening. Roof ventilation, which includes assessing whether your soffit intake is actually working. And diagnosing a leak above the eave that is presenting as soffit damage.
Where the trim itself needs replacing, that is carpentry and we will tell you plainly rather than working around it. What we would strongly suggest is that the cause gets corrected at the same time. Replacing a fascia board while leaving the overflowing gutter that rotted it means doing the work twice, and we would rather tell you that up front than be the reason it happened.

What is the difference between soffit and fascia?
The fascia is the vertical board along the roof edge that your gutters attach to. The soffit is the horizontal surface underneath the roof overhang, between the fascia and the wall, and it holds the vents that let air into your attic.
Does ROYH Build Co replace soffit and fascia?

Why does my fascia keep rotting after being replaced?
Because the water that rotted it is still arriving. Almost always that is an overflowing or badly pitched gutter, a missing or short drip edge, or a leak higher up the roof exiting at the eave. Replacing the board without correcting the source means repeating the job.
My gutter is pulling away from the house. Is that the gutter or the fascia?
Usually the fascia. The gutter is fastened into that board, so when it softens the fasteners lose their grip and the gutter starts to sag and pull. It then overflows more, which wets the board further. It is worth checking the board rather than just refastening the gutter.
Can blocked soffit vents damage my roof?
Yes, and it is a common and invisible problem. Soffit vents are the intake half of attic ventilation. Painted over, or blocked from inside by insulation pushed into the eaves, the attic cannot breathe, which holds heat and humidity against the underside of the roof deck and shortens the roof's life.
