Westlake Royal's catalog splits into two broad material families. Kilns fire clay tile, and the color runs all the way through the material, not just on top as a coating. That's part of why clay holds its color for a long time. Molds shape concrete tile instead. That process lets the company offer a wider range of shapes and finishes, often at a lower cost per square than clay.

Both material families fit well with Spanish and Mediterranean-style homes, a style you'll see often in master-planned communities and larger custom homes around The Woodlands. Barrel and S-shaped tile profiles give that style its rolling, hand-set roofline. Tile has a reputation for lasting a long time, and it generally earns it. Clay and concrete are both inorganic. They don't rot the way some other roofing materials can. They also hold up well against the direct UV exposure that hits Texas roofs most of the year. Tile sits slightly above the roof deck instead of flat against it. That small airspace can help moderate how much heat moves into the attic on a hot afternoon.

None of that makes a tile roof maintenance-free. Individual tiles can crack from impact. The underlayment beneath the tile has its own service life and eventually needs attention, even while the tile above still looks fine.
